Sports Button vs. Steptronic SD Mode

Just got a Z4 3.0 with the Sports Package and Steptronic.

Does anyone know if there is a difference going to SD mode on the Steptronic shifter vs. using the sports button?

I would assume that it is just another way to go into sports mode, but it seems like the sports button provides better performance. Can't tell if there is any difference in SD Mode.
