Sometimes when I start the car the hazard flashers come on. I have to turn them off using the flasher button on the console. This will happen two or three starts in a row and then it will stop for a while. Then start again. Any ideas on what is happening.

I’ve not heard of that specific fault but in general I think the E36 is susceptible to a lot of electronic gremlins.
For example:
On Saturday evening I started the car and before I backed out of the driveway I tried to use the windshield washers, as there was some film on the window. Nothing...no water, no pump sound, nothing but the wipers rubbing on my dry filmy window.
So, off I drive. Thinking about the fact that I rarely use my washers and that I recall seeing a good amount of fluid in the resivour last time I looked under the hood. I wondered if my tank had a leak or if a line was clogged.
Get to my destination and when I turn off the car the OBC tells me my washer fluid is low. Again I think this is odd as I rarely use the washers and there was at least half a tank the last time I looked.
Later get back in my car and drive away. Get some spray off of another car so I use my washers and wipers...No problem. Worked perfectly.

If you don't use the washers very often, sometimes it will take a couple of hits to prime the pump and refill the lines.
WRT the hazard flashers, could you be hitting the switch with something?
