 My bell will not stop?

I have a 98 2.8 Z3.

This morning I removed the key after getting to work and the bell would not go off. You know its the bell that tells you that you left your lights on or keys in the ignition. It only sounds when the driver door is open. Close the door and it sounds. Open the passenger door and it does not sound. Open the drivers door and it still sounds. The keys are out and the lights are off. Do you have any idea what may be causing this?

This could be related. Over the past year, I have noticed slop in the ingnition/key mechinism. Some times it spins around without starting the car. I ussually just remove the key and try again and it works. I've been thinking that this could get me stranded somewhere someday. I guess something esle could have broken in this area and noe the bell will not go off (with driver door open).

Is this an expensive item to have fixed?

thx for you advise in advance.

It happened at Homecoming, so I had one of the factory workers look at it. He said it is not an uncommon problem. He pulled the bottom cover off the steering column and took a pair of tweezers and pulled part of the switch out. Now it doesn't ding at all. He said I could have the switch replaced when I got back home, but I never bothered.

when you remove your key...does it make a nice "click" sound? if not...your key is not totally disengaging from the lock cylinder which makes the computer think youve left your keys in the ignition. its happened to me before but always fixes itself. dealer told me it was "normal"

Sounds like a dealer issue. Glade to see someone else with a 2.8 posting here.
