 Two or three stage paint?

2000 z3, 2.8 liter just got banged up, I'll give the story in a minute. Right now I have a paint question. I got two quotes, and they are very different in price. The main difference seems to be one says two stage paint, the other says three stage. Which is correct?

Ok, so here is the story. I know I should be mad, but it is so unreal it's funny.

Last Thursday I decided to go out to lunch with the boss. We decided to go to a new african restaurant in town, but couldn't persuade anyone else to go (it's utah, what can I say) so it was just us two. My boss is a really funny, good natured guy. Lunch with him is always entertaining.

I drove the bimmer that day because the weather has been unseasonably warm here. I've let a few other people take my bimmer for a spin, so of corse I let the boss. We get in, and he asks if there is anything special he should know about the car. "Well, the only really unusual thing about the car is that reverse is right next to first gear." He played with the shifter, getting used to the patern, then started up the car. He puts it in gear, looks backwards, and lets out the clutch.

Yup, you guessed it. The car was in first gear and jumpes into the truck in front of us.

Somehow, he finds reverse this time and backs away from the truck slowly. We're both silent for 30 seconds, then he asks "Did you want to get out and take a look?" I cringe. "Yes" I say. I get out and take a look. The bumper from the truck in front had gone about an inch over my bumper and pushed in the grill and hood. Later inspections showed the damage was only to the hood, and nothing else (PHEW!!). Part of the plastic grill frame was hanging on by a thread, so I pulled it off and showed it to my boss, still in the car. Now it was his turn to cringe. I got back in and he asked "Do you want to drive?" "Yes" I said. Of corse he offered to pay for repairs. The drive to lunch was rather quiet, but after a few jokes on his part (about my evaluation coming up, expensive lunch, etc) we actually enjoyed it somewhat.

I know should be upset, but it is just so surreal it's funny. I thought this kind of stuff only happened in sit-coms, your boss banging up your fancy car. The upside is all the little rock chips in the hood will be fixed when they do repairs, so the car will look better than ever once it's finished.

So any ideas on the type of paint, two or three stage? Would that be written somewhere on the car describing the paint? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Me neither but your supper cool for 1) letting him try to drive 2) taking it so well

Don't sweat it. The car will look good as new.

Having banged up my share of cars...liek over 25...try to ensure

1)Shop is clean. Body shop dust is pain in the arse..you want a shop that will take pride
2) make sure they go overboard on tape to prevent overspray- it will always remind you of the damage other wise
3) request originals parts and make sure insurance company won't prevent it
4) look to see they replace everything they write up. Sometimes they will cut corners on little things that you may not notice. ( Kidney grill for instance..if broken..they may try to rig it )
5) look closely at trim pieces..you may drive home with something missing and then go back and forth to get it
6) Call the local BMW dealer ( sonce you are in Utah, your choices may be slim) and ask where they would repair thier cars
7) make sure its factory paint..not some chemist dude who says he can mix it with his state of the art machine..you want it to match..period

and I think 3 stage could be primer, paint and gloss coat.

Good luck..and next time ask your boss if he would mind letting you drive his car to lunch next time...he should be plenty nervous

To the best of my knowledge, all these cars are 2-stage paint: base coat + clear coat.

3-stage normally means base coat, pearl coat and clear coat. That doesn't preclude a body shop guy from saying '3-stage' when he really means primer + 2-stage paint.

What color is your car?

The car is cienna red metallic (with tan top and interior for those interested, Pic attached). The 2-stage quote guy said the vin listed 2-stage, but he would take a closer look when I brought it in. If it is actually 3 he'd do it for the same quoted price. I think it's 3 because the paint has more depth than most cars. But we'll see.

Thanks for the body shop advice. Both shops looked immaculate, and the cheaper 2-stage guy comes highly recommended as a paint fanatic. Plus he is a close friend of a friend of mine, so he'll hear about it if I'm not happy (he may have given me a discount because of this, I'm not sure. The parts were a little cheaper).

Thanks
