 Are the dealers aware..

My 01 is going in for service tomorrow. Are the dealers aware of the trunk tear/ diff support failure? What's the cause and is it a covered item? Also, I read a while back that the S54 should only be filled 1/2 way between the add and full mark. Just yesterday the service engine and the oil light came on while under normal driving. After I restarted the car, the lights went off. That's a new one.. 12,000 miles, Freak of nature, or do I bring it up to the dealer? Appreciate your help.

There has been no service bulletin (to my knowledge) on the rear end problems. Hence some dealers are aware (those that have been made aware by customers), and some are not. Thus far I've not seen a dealer and BMWNA _offer_ to do a fix like Randy's solution. Randy got both of his covered under warranty (one outside of warranty), but he did the fabrication work. BMWNA seems to want to offer 'restore it to factory condition' which means it'll just happen again at a later date.

For the long haul (100,000+ miles), I don't think any of the 6-cylinders cars will get by w/o reinforcement (and Ireland subframe bushings). Just my guess. You could try the Ireland subframe bushings and driving gingerly all of the time, but what fun would that be in an M?
But if you keep a close eye on it, you can wait until it shows signs of trouble before having it fixed. I had Randy do mine proactively while the car was still straight.

Cause has been covered. Do a search on subframe.

You have changed the oil before, right? I mean since the 1,200 mile service interval?

Yes re. not filling to the top mark. Ron posted the service bulletin re. oil level in the S54. A search should find it.

Engines often consume more oil during break-in miles. Smart to check it every few thousand miles (and change it every 5,000). What's the reading on the dipstick right now?

Can't hurt to have the dealer dump the codes.

Thanks Daniel,
I would like to investigate getting it corrected or sell it. How long does it take, how much and how do I get ahold of Ron? Is this due to too much torque or poor design?
Yes, the oil has been changed twice, 10x60 and it does'nt use a drop after 3500 miles since the last change, so I will have the dealer pull the code and see why it happened.
Please let me know about the reinforcing or if anyone is interested in a clean 13,000 mile 01 with S54.
Neal.

I think selling the car just because of a potential problem is not a solution if you truly enjoy the car. I went through this thought process due to other even more major problems this car can have and I decided to keep it. I just cannot see myself without driving this thing.
