is there a way i can get a manual of some sort to figure out where the heck this "gasket" is?

ac | Get a manual from Bentley Publishers, your 96 can use the original 96-98 manual. Here is a scan from the manual, sorry no part number, but at least this should get you started on taking a look at the brake light area to see if there is any damage, corrosion or leaks.
