Semi OT: Welding
With the prospect of Randy releasing his subframe modifications I'd like to start looking at taking a welding course and buying a welder to do this modification myself.
What should I be looking at for welding car sheet metal? A tig unit? I've only done stick welding before so tig/mig units are all new to me.
I am thinking about taking a course so that I don't mess things up royally and learn how to create proper beads.

Using the trunkfloor work as an example, you'd want the MIG welder. The miller 135 (120 vac) or the 175 (220 vac and the one Terry & I selected) are both good choices. The online sources are much cheaper than local welding supply house prices. Other brands offer similar machines.
As for training, if you can swing a week in Cleveland, Ohio; there's the Lincoln Motorsports Welding School. It's primarily a TIG course, but once in the lab, they'll set you up on any machine you want. Price is reasonable, even factoring in the hotel (with daily shuttle to/from the plant).

Does the trunk floor require a mig welder due to metal thickness or other reasons? I'm really a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing(but I figure that the money I can save by doing the work myself will more than pay for a decent machine. I'd love to ship my car to you to get the work done but yikes... it'd cost me!)
There's a good trade school in town that offers some courses but I definitely want to find something more automotive oriented vs welding tubular steel!
| | Reply » Semi OT: Welding | In part, because of the metal thickness, but also because it is so easy to use "out of position" (and there is a lot of that involved_more so with the Rdstr).

These folks also handle the TIG class that Wyatt Swaim teaches in Georgia, which I've heard is top notch. Wyatt is internationally known, he's part of the Indy 500 trackside welding team and has done lots of IRL and CART work.
I know next to nothing about gas welding, just did some poking around looking for various classes. I trust Randy w/o question, but Cleveland is a good long way from Calgary. The Sportair class might be a good start, the price is reasonable, and it's in your backyard.
