Personal opinion - this really sucks since the ZHP package was designed with a lot of alcantara - especially when you have the alcantara seats. Plus I am really interested to get one myself this next winter and I love alcantara.
Alcantara is very nice but you have to take care of it properly. Otherwise it will turn to a cheap cloth appearance really fast especially on a steering wheel. When I had that ZHP loaner for 3 months, the car only had 6000 miles but the steering wheel was thrashed already. I was nice and fixed it for them the best I could by shaving the thing really carefully.
Anyway I hope that they will at least have both available from now on.

the alcantera wheel would look better if the entire thing (center & airbag) was alcantera, it looks cheesey as is, I imagine they are already being hit by owners trying to get them swapped out under warranty with the hand wear issue
the leather replacement looks much nicer
I agree with one thing here.
The move is definitely caused by warranty issues with the alcantara wheel since people do not treat the thing right. And since BMW has repeatedly proved it, the only this they care is the bottom line, warrantying alcantara wheels probably was deemed expensive in the long run.
