 Z-3 Rear end noise

Does anyone hear a thumping noise from the rear end of their Z-3 (1996) that sounds like the exhaust hitting the undercarriage ONLY WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL? My dealer dudes can't hear it (of course) but I do! My garage maiden has less than 20K miles so I don't think it's a wear problem. HELP!

I have a garaged 1996 Z-3 50K mint, only use it in the warm weather. However, I bought it from a lawyer two years ago who used it the same way I do. When I bought it I noticed a rattle sound from the exhaust/thumping. I said to the previous owner, must be a bracket. I brought it to BMW and they put a new exhaust on it from the heads to the cat. However, the noise got worse. Here is the kicker. My wife and I took it to Cape Cod for it's first long ride since I had it. I latched onto a boxer on I-95 at 80 for most of the way. Well, the noise is gone.
The car either had debris in the lower exhaust and blew out form the heat of the ride or your guess is as good as mine. I guess it needs to be driven hard on ce in a while.

Some coupe owners have found that the gas tank itself is loose and needs to be tightened back up. I wouldn't call it a common problem, but it's one of the things that's been found when chasing the sounds that come from the rear half of the car.

Good to know. My Roadster makes a "kabump" sound from that area from time to time. Dealer couldn't find anything. We'll have to take a second look.

Your discription of the sound you here is very much like mine. I suspect that there is not enough clearance between the undercarriage and the exhaust system and the extra weight of a full tank of gas exacerbates the problem. As soon as my gas level gets down to near a half tank, the sound goes away. DUH! Well, good luck with your problem; if I ever cure mine, l'll be sure to let all Bimmerfesters know.
