My S54 rasp is now gone

I just finished a project that began last Thanksgiving and involved my car being in a constant state of disassembly since then. Thanksgiving was the RSM's...a month ago was new rear shocks. The final thing was a layer of liquid sound dampening material. I applied two coats of Elemental Design's eDead v3 with a paint brush. I got all the horizontal metal around the battery tray in the hatch, on the wheel well arches and then down into the pockets at each rear corner. Everything put back together and the end result is a car that has virtually no road noise from the rear and is (right now) squeak and rattle-free thanks to a lot of adhesive-backed felt.

When putting everything together, I was tapping around in the hatch before either of the two floor carpet pieces went back in their places. When thumping on the battery cover, I noticed a metallic resonance from under the car. I reach up between the exhaust to the horizontal heat shield that is above them and wiggled it a bit. More thumping revealed that the resonance was gone.

Now, when I accelerate, I no longer get that typical S54 exhaust rasp betwen about 2300 and 2600 rpms. I don't know if it was the sound dampening material, the heat shield adjustment, or both.

Some would probably say that the car is almost too quiet. I guess that's motivation for me to drive with the windows down more, or to get that Magnaflow exhaust.

JohnS54coupe: Where do you get the sound dampening material? How much?

Very interesting. I'm also curious as to where you got the sound deadening paint.

i wonder if that would apply to e46 m3's as well, out of curiousity. they have the same rasping issues dont they?

Can you post a sound clip and pics? What exhaust do you have?

Not to rain on your parade (nice job!) but my exhaust rasps with the heatshields in the rear completely removed. I think we're talking about two different sounds here. You'll now get to know the exhaust rasp versus the heatshield resonance.

Of course, at the moment, one of my heatshields makes a lot of noise because I lost one of the fasteners that connects it to the battery box when I had it out.
