 Manual transmission breakin?

I had the transmission catch pin service bulletin performed -- but there were serious problems with the existing catch pins, which could not be removed.

So I ended up with a new transmission under warranty. Of course I was tempted to ask about the upcharge to a 6 speed... but didn't.

Any suggestions or cautions on the breakin of a S54 M Roadster transmission? From what I understand, it is not necessary to stay under the RPM or speed limits associated with the new engine or new diff breakin. But correct me if I might be wrong.

well in the name of "you dont want to take a chance" I would say atleast 500miles of not to hard driving, but that is me

I concur - let the gears get some break-in time before going insane ~500 miles should be about right.

See on the 7th for the Tech X.

I also just had my tranny replaced under warranty, the old one had 6,000 miles on it. I asked around about upgrading to 6 speeds, but its not just a bolt in, you have to shorten the driveshaft. This is not something a dealer would do.

Did both of you race our cars alot, or is this tranny problem a wide spread ordeal

(Race Cars on street alot?) Ha, no, but I drive to work on I680 over the Sunol grade and 237. If you are only going 80 MPH, you must use the slow lane

My car has never been tracked AFAIK, I am second owner at 2K miles.

Actually they replaced my tranny because:
1) sometimes at a light, it was impossible to get from neutral to 1st (except as Randy explained, going to second, then 1st) This problem has been ongoing for a while.

2) In 2nd, mid revs, twice it popped out of gear, with loud noise. This problem occured at about 6K miles

Also they put in a clutch kit. The tranny was rebuilt, but in the words of my service advisor "You want a broken new one or a fixed rebuilt one"

I'll take the rebuilt one. Would have liked a 6 speed, but is a major mod.
