full blast on '4'

any thoughts?

No. I'm showing you how to replace the fan resistor which I suspect is the problem.

My fan switch did the same thing several months ago in my e30. Rather than replacing the reistor, I removed it and thoroughly cleaned the resistor coils with WD-40 and then reinstalled. It's worked fine since.
