Hi there, I own a 2001 Z3 2.2i but am making a few mods to make it look a bit nicer like the M model inside. Namely, I am adding the 3 extra guages and the chrome ring around the gearstick. What I would really like to do is illuminate the gearstick, without having to buy the original M one. My gearstick is the solid matte chrome version. Model number (25-11-9-416-257) All help appreciated. Cheers

We used to make those. Easy to screw up and scratch the outer finish.
You will need a fixture to hold the knob and keep it from rotating in the mill. We used a modified BMW shift lever.
Remove the shift pattern insert. You will destroy it in the process on the matte chrome knobs.
Spotface the aluminum, drill hole(s) all the way through for wires. Insert circuit board. We used ultra bright amber LEDs. You could choose another color if you wanted. You will need to buy a mylar diffuser and glue it in on top of the circuit board with LEDs. With no diffuser you will get hot spots where the light is too bright and uneven. Then replace insert with a new one.
It is a lot of work. We had a hard time selling them at $130-$150. And with our scrap rates we probably lost money on the project over all.
Buying a BMW one is a lot easier. Or one of the matt chrome/leather ones from us.

From the sound of it, I shouldn't hold my breath for an illumintated wood grain knob for an 01 Z3, huh?
