Wife's M3 has a check eng light on

My Wife's M3 97 E36 check eng. light came on
I posted this in the M3 Forum and got no hits
We just got back from a week at Bass Lake Ca
No fishing just a lot of bait bugs on the windshield

My Wife's M3 has a check eng light came on on the way home.
anyway I got out the PEAKE R5/FCX-II code/reset tool and ran the the Eng. check

I got the Fault code EA and E9 using the Fault code table 16
E9 read as "Catalyst efficiency below threshold Cyl#1-3"
EA read as "Catalyst efficiency below threshold Cyl#4-6"

Can I assume that this applies to the catalytic converter?
Some info that The wife told me she had been driving after a heavy rain when she drove through a deep pot hole covered by water, at which point the check Eng. light comes on.

I reset the light but I would like to know How or What to do.
Thanks to all
Mike Threadgill

I have very limited knowledge regarding Check Engine lights, but every time I've had one illuminate on a BMW (two times), it's been solved by fiddling with the gas cap. Remove it, put it back on, drive for a while, and it's always gone off within a few miles.

You might try lifting up the car. If you follow the wires from the O2 sensors, you'll see they go to 2 connectors underneath a heat shield (or there are on the Roadster). Pull them out and seperate the connectors and clean them (maybe some WD40). If it is water on connectors, that might fix it.

Note that there are two connectors one for each O2 sensor and they need to go back the same way. On the M Roadster, BMW was kind enough to make the wires different lengths so that it is easy to see which way they go. You might make a note of which wires went to which connector so that it doesn't get mixed up.

Good luck!
