My Z3 is having a birthday

It was about 65 degrees and sunny in the Washington, D.C. area this afternoon so I took my Z3 out for a ride for it's 4th birthday celebration. I picked it up from BMW of Arlington on Feb 8, 2001 about 1 hour after it rolled off the truck from Spartanburg.

The good news is that I have had exactly one problem with it during this past four years. This summer the hydro unit that moves the top up and down stopped working. I switched the top over to manual operation and got the hydro unit replaced this past week just before my 4 year/50,000 mile warranty expired.

The bad news is that I now have over 1,000 miles on the odometer. 1,013 to be precise. I know that most of you will say I am crazy and this time I would probably agree with you but that's the way it is.

In any event I still get a kick out of driving my Z3 every time I get behind the steering wheel.

Enjoy yours!

are you serious?
in 4 years you have yet to even pass the break in point?
may I ask why you drive it so little? or even keep it to drive a mere 250 miles a year?

What else can I say?

Fred,
It's amazing that you've put that few miles on your car over the last 4 years and I must commend you on your great self control. Heck, you put 250 miles on average per year on your car. I put 250 miles on my car when I go to the corner store to pick up a loaf of bread and a quart of milk. Mind you, I enjoy the trips immensly.
For you, every ride in your car is like that very first ride, so the joy never ends. Every drive seems magical. I congratulate you!
Have you considered selling the car to me? Just kidding, I already know the answer.

Holy crap! My car just had its first birthday on January 22. My odometer is just over 3,900 miles and I thought that was low! My car has never felt the rain, and only been washed about 3 times... I keep it zainoed, dusted and covered so it's always spotless.

I totally understand how you feel. I can only speak for my own "craziness" as someone who does drive their Bimmer "sparingly." I can say that each time I drive it is special. And there is a a special feeling, almost like driving it off the showroom floor, everytime I drive knowing that it is so clean. It's a special form of OCD, I guess. It does make for some strange looks from passengers when I hang a u-turn to avoid water in the road!

Congrats on keeping the Z3 like new. I'm so jealous, I'm not going to drive my car for the next five years! I hope my top mechanism doesn't break; I must admit that everytime I do drive, it's with the top down. I can't resist the open air!
