 Bad calipers?

I know, wrong forum... it's for an M3 but they're the same calipers as our M coupes / roadsters and I trust the advice here.

'95 E36 M3, 65K miles and still has the original pads and rotors. My co-driver recently bought the car so we're bringing it up to speed for autox use. While replacing the front rotors I found both caliper piston seals were not seated properly, and I could see corrosion on the piston beneath the area the seal normally protects.

My inclination is to replace both calipers, despite the expense. If someone knows that this is overkill I'll just rebuild the calipers and clean off the corrosion. The brakes work fine, without any dragging right now.

Any opinions?

Mike

I've rebuilt E36M3 calipers before, and the boots do come off a little too easily (they changed this for E46s by embedding a steel ring into the boot, and putting em on is a chore). Take em apart and see how far the rust goes down the side of the piston. I'd say, if it's not up to where the inner cylinder seal is with new pads and rotors on, just clean it up really good and rebuild it. If there's any chance that it goes down past where the cylinder seal is, better safe than sorry and replace it. If the caliper bore past the seal is good, see if you can just get new pistons.

Each caliper retails for $474.00.
I would try rebuilding them first.
Pistons are not available separately from BMW.
I've heard stainless ones are from someone.

I stand corrected re replacement pistons.

The stainless ones are available through Korman.

Turner has the calipers for $179ea
I don't know if they're new or refurb.

That's probably new unless it specifically stattes "refurbished".

Ron quoted dealer list, which is usually very high. You have to be a dolt to pay list price even at the dealer.

On most items, that is.
