Exhausted Topic- same post as on M Series Board

You may have already seen this post on the M Series Board. I am hoping there is different sample of enthusiasts to poll here on Z series to draw some conclusions......

After market exhausts- we have all seen the adds and read the articles..5 to 10 hp ....
I have a 2000 MZ3 Coupe with Dinan Stage 5 and Schrick Intake...STOCK EXHAUST

We know they sound good...some awesome..but many have deafing resonance..

We know they look sweet- something for everyones individula style...

We know they can save weight..but lets be realistic- whats 14lbs- Ok if you are racing SCCA and need to save weight and do corner weighting etc...otherwise..

But do they really work? What I mean is are we getting real HP! And who had done before and after dyno pulls. WOuld like to hear of personal experience- not quoted adds or marketing hype.

I have not added one because:
1) Resonance-
2) Unproven performance "worthwhile" gain over stock system
3) maybe waste of money

I know there are a lot of guys ( and gals ) who like the sound..but think about this..you fly by a cop at 80 or more...he may not notice you so much if he you don't sound like a racer boy...I think the sound may create unnecessary attention if you are.....

not getting a performance benefit.

Love to hear your thougths and proof ...
Thanks

I have owned many many cars & motorcycles over the past 36 years, & I have retained the stock exhaust on only a handful of these vehicles. Many of the points you make are valid, but that's just the kind of guy I am . Same thing can almost be said of OEM wheels, but the same thing I said about exhaust could be applied to me & wheels, although I don't think I have ever changed out any rims on my motorcycles. Oh well, you get the idea .

I don't have any data on before and after Supersprints. There is this S52 data, but as with all dyno data, the differences are small and it may be because of the mod and it may just be in the error range.

Supersprint looks nice. Supersprint sounds nice. That's why I installed mine. I can feel no difference in performance or engine response. I put a Remus can on my motorcycle and deleted the cat, which did make the engine rev quicker. But again, the Remus looks nice and it sounds nice.

Do they really work as far as increasing power? I don't have any data that says they do. I dunno if anyone does.

I like the look and sound of the Remus on my S54, although it doesn't do squat for the rasp.

I have some evidence that the Remus produces more power than the SuperTrapps I had on before. I made 4 timed runs (2 each direction) accelerating full throttle from 40 to 90mph in 3rd gear with each exhaust. With 10 disks in the Trapps the Remus averaged .61 seconds quicker. If I dropped the high and low times the Remus were .54 seconds quicker. For a run lasting around 9 seconds I guess that's significant... For what it's worth, I wish I had made the same measurements with the stock exhaust. My admittedly suspect butt dyno indicated that the Trapps actually made less power than stock. Of course what they lacked in raw power they more than made up for in raw noise!

I can tell you that the pipe accounts for a huge gain on Motorcross and ICC kart motors- the whole power wave / scavenging effect stuff...I also put a mig pipe on my R1..but I also did a jet kit- real improvement no doubt about it......but when it comes to modern day sports cars- especially a dual system like the M coupes have- IMO...I think they would be pretty efficient already

Please don't misunderstand me..I like the idea of the aftermarket exhaust..and its awesome many of you have done them for what ever reason...individuality, sound, to intimidate other slower moving vehicles, listen to the rumble when you go into tunnel..etc

I am just looking to confirm the marketing hype..as in AA tunings article where they claim to make more useabkle low to mid range power than everyone else, and overal best performance gain.

Otherwise I think the $1300 bucks buys a Quaife LS

No fair comparing the exhaust on a 2-stroke or 4-stroke motocross motor to a BMW engine that has to pass emissions.

There is one reason you missed for going to an aftermarket exhaust: gaining the room needed to have Randy install a dual-ear differential cover. The stock pipes are in the way at the muffler inlets. Actually, it's mostly the reinforcements, but I don't think it could be make to work without serious cutting and welding. Considering how heavy the stock exhaust is, that might not work out so well. It needs the reinforcements at the muffler inlets, it really is that heavy compared to the alternatives.

Anyway, that's the main reason I went to an aftermarket exhaust this fall instead of waiting until the spring. But I went with the Eisenmann Sport instead of the Race, which is quite reasonable sound-level wise until you dig deep in the throttle. Far from deafening. Just dandy around town at under 4000 rpm, as well as cruising the highway at 80 mph. The Race is not so tame on the highway; the Forbes' S54 asserts attention from a good distance.

My throttle is a little more responsive, particularly in sport mode. I doubt it equates to much added HP. Certainly not enough to make you say 'wow'. My butt hasn't noticed. A dyno might, but alone it wouldn't be enough to get me excited. But with custom tuning like AA, you can make the most of your mods, and to me that's the smart thing to if you spend a bunch of money on exhaust, cams, intake, headers, manifold, etc. Otherwise it's expensive bolt-on parts that may or may not yield significant gains, and in some cases will yield significant losses.

Since you're running Schrick and Dinan Stage 5, I suspect you actually will see a measurable gain; your engine is waiting for you to change to a more free-flowing exhaust. Whether or not your butt will feel it, I don't know. I do know how to find out for yourself. But certainly changing your final drive ratio will be something you notice, all of the time.

Do both and report back.
