 Trunk Tear

It's been a month now and my car is still in the shop for this very severe problem. I just got an estimate for the trunk flooring piece. $1300.00. Appx. $1800.00 in labor and they still wont know if some of the other parts are salavgeable. It started w/ the differential separating from the subframe. I hope to get it back next week. I tried taking it to three BMW dealers in LA in December and they were all booked for 2 weeks. I have filed a complaint w/ NHSTA and once the car is repaired I will seek legal action against BMWNA for not requiring a recall. There is more than enough proof that this is an issue and all owners of these cars should be holding BMWNA accountable. By the way no mods on my car, & no racing. 115,00 miles. Not if, but when?

I just showed up at the dealer (Center BMW in Sherman Oaks). They were familiar with the problem and told me to bring it back the next week when the regional rep was there. It took a long time to fix, but BMW picked up the tab and was courteous about it. Didn't have to threaten anyone...

Also, if you want to get it fixed by someone other than the dealer, you might check http://www.z3bimmer.com/Garage/Fixes/DiffCrack/ This guy got his fixed AND reinforced for a "few hundred" in San Diego. BMW's fix for my car was fixing, but not reinforcing...

If you want to spend $2K, then I'd suggest you send it to Ohio.

What kind of structural mods can be done to ensure this won't happen? Who does this in the states or does any dealer offer these mods? Does anyone have pics of what to look for?
Neal.

One of the best resources for this problem is our own Randy Forbes. He has had some success getting his dealer to fix the problem, and he also does the fixes himself for fellow board members (for a resonable fee, of course). Connect to http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82822

Hi Neal,

Here are some links to pictures of what I'm doing in Toledo. I've got an M Coupe arriving from Chicago tomorrow for this upgrade. The next car in line is also from Illinois

This is the meat of the upgrade:
