Realized I need to get myself a caliper sooner or later for measuring various things.
I saw some on the Craftsman website. Are those a decent deal for the money?
Would like to keep it around $50 or less for one piece, perhaps would spring for a two-piece at $100ish.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I bought my current set here, after I crushed the dial on my old one:
Garrett-Wade
$60 for the pair. I'm happy with them. It's EXTREMELY rare that I need the 1/128" one, but once in a great while, it comes in handy.
You can buy much more expensive ones, but you'll regret it if you're like me and have issues with prematurely destroying semi-fragile tools.

So that includes both standard and metric, correct?

I used to work in machining, and we always used Mitutoyo. They are pro quality products. The dial Verniers weren't that expensive - probably around $100. They have digital ones too, but are almost double the cost.

Quote: | So that includes both standard and metric, correct? | Yes. The 35N01.02 caliper is graduated for both .001" and .1mm. The other is graduated for 1/128" (essentially useless for car or machining work, but not so useless for woodworking).
EDIT: they both came with plastic foam-lined cases too, a surprise for such cheap tools.

Good 0-6" Mitutoyo dial calipers will run you around $75.00. Electronic ones around $100.00.
Those are normal list prices; but I receive sale catalogs in the mail every day.
Of course, nowadays you wouldn't have any trouble finding a toolmaker or machinist who has lost his job due to offshore outsourcing; so used, high-quality machinist tools should be extremely easy to find. And high-quality calipers will last a lifetime, if cared for properly.
