Am I crazy or a Z3 2.3 is actually a 2.5 liter? Is it because of the same reason a 323i/Ci/iS actually a 2.5L? I asked because I was reading January's Roundel and this guy wrote that how his '2.3 liter engine' on his 1999 Z3 2.3 has more than enough power for him. I was thinking 'are yor sure it's a 2.3L?' |

The 2.3 is the 4cyl.
Although, I do see your logic of 323 / 2.5l!!

Although, I do see your logic of 323 / 2.5l!! | I donīt think BMW has made a 2.3 liter 4cylinder in the last ten years. The 2.3 is either a real 2.3 I6 or a detuned 2.5 I6

here ya go folks! http://www.dtmpower.net/forum/showthread.php?t=82076 the Z3 2.3 is a 2.5L, the e36 and e46 323's are 2.5L's. this was done for marketing reasons because at that time, there existed a 2.8L engine that replaced the original 2.5L from the e36. bmw marketing seeing that the numbers are too close made the designation lower for the 2.5L engine of the time. we still see this now with the e46 320i/Ci where the engine is really a 2.2L I6.

Thanks for the info, HW.
I knew the Z3 2.3 is a 2.5L I6 because of the e36 323. But it was still very weird that BMW would 'misbadge' the Z3 for marketing purposes.

There has never been an actual 2.3l 323i ever officially sold in the US. It existed in E21 and E30 forms outside of the US.
What I've read as being 'official' was that when the M52b25 was introduced for the E36, BMW wanted to distinguish it from the earlier M50b25 325, and also separate it a bit from the new 328. So the 2.3 stuck, even on the Z3, as well as (non-US) E34s and E39s with the M52b25.
This is a habit with BMW. Later E39 and E38 5/740 were actually all 4.4 (look at the side of a V8 X5) and the 06 7er 750 (as posted by SARAFIL) are 4.8l.
