I may have blown my subwoofer
I never thought I'd put enough power to it to do it, but apparently, I have (thanks to my Traffic Pro's Loudness setting).
Oddly enough, I've never blown a speaker before, so I don't know what to look for. Apparently, the bass response is down from it, so it's possible I only blew one of the two speakers. My car was manufactured in January 1999, and it has the bass horn assembly.
I don't think I want to just replace it. What I think I'd like to do is replace the speakers with something better. Has anyone here done that?
There are alternatives. I think my car's too "early" a model for the BMW replacement one, and the one at Z3 Bass.com requires a new amp (funny, but I still have the original amplifier, but I did upgrade the kick panel speakers.
What would you do in this situation? I want to keep the original appearance, and if possible, not add another amp to the car.
BTW, does anyone have a history of the Z3 / MZ3 subwoofers? I know there were several models and designs...

Speakers usually fail in one of two ways: cone separates from the suspension ring, or the voice coil fries. Usually the latter, from running the amp to levels of high distortion. A third possibility here is that the output stage of the amp has been damaged from heat.
You can check for voice coil damage by checking the DC resistance of the speaker with your multimeter. If it's toast, it'll read open (very high resistance) or shorted (no resistance). I don't know the nominal impedance of the stock drivers in your enclosure, but I'mm assuming they're somewhere between 4 and 8 ohms. Anything below 4 ohms or above 16 ohms would be suspicious.

The z3bass.com solution doesn't require a new amp, but the stock amp is weak and hence won't yield the bass response that the 6w0 is capable of producing.

Plus I suspect it isn't a good match to the stock enclosure. Not to mention the stock enclosure is lame.
Your best route is to replace the stock amp and get the z3bass.com enclosure. If you stick with the stock amp, you might as well just get a new stock subwoofer. I'd be surprised if you could still get the dual 5" driver setup, you'd probably have to get the single 6" driver subwoofer. It will work, but it sucks as much as the dual 5" one did.

I know there were several models and designs... | The quick rundown of what I know... no subwoofer in early models, then the dual 5" driver model like yours, then the single dual-voice-coil 6" driver w/ separate amp. Then the Sunfire option for those that had the separate amp.

I take it there are no real drop-in replacement amps? If I go aftermarket, I'll have to do some rewiring, yes?
| | Reply » I may have blown my subwoofer | You realize, if you just change the amp with the sub you wont believe the sound improvement.
| | Reply » I may have blown my subwoofer | Changing the amp on a roadster is a piece of cake. There isn't really any excuse not to do it.
