 Spacers & Lugs

Hi,

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to air their thoughts to the following.

I have recently fitted new FK suspension coilovers (very similar to KW V1), the problem is that in order to avoid rubbing i have had to fit 5mm spacers.

Are the standard lugs ok to use or do i need to purchase longer bolts, I've read in a few places that upto 5mm is ok anything bigger then new lugs are a must.

I just thought i would see what people thought.

By the way the car drives fine with these on , not vibration issues i was just a little concerned that safety might be compromised.

Also are there any general problems with using spacers.

Thanks for any info.

Cheers

Col

Col,

Spacers or not, you want to add studs to your car. It's easier to R&R the wheels with studs (and spacers). But here's the BIG reason: If you damage the threads in the hub, you got a problem. Threads are delicate, and all it takes is one goober to damage them with his air gun. Studs, however, can be replaced in about 8 seconds when they're damaged (keep a spare one or two around, same with the lug nuts)

The standard length studs (got them from Bimmerworld) will hold a 10mm spacer. I got his longer ones for the rear where I'm running 10mm spacers, but the standard length studs would have been fine. So I've got studs all around, standard up front, long ones and 10mm spacers in the rear. BTW, IMHO, the 10mm spacer really sets the stock rear wheel where it should be.

Im not keen on adding unsprung weight, but damn would the rears look good pushed out a little. So Im thinking maybe I'll add some spacers but wouldnt it be wise to add the same size spacer all around (say 10mm front and back)? that way you are equally messing with the wheel geometry all around?

Depends on your intentions...

I put 5 mm spacers on the front of my 01 to help offset the built in tendency towards understeer (1/4" + or - allowed by SCCA rules).

If all he needs are 10 mm spacers for strut clearance, that's fine. I would however, use corespondingly longer bolts (or studs) if it was me.

OT... how do you like the FKs? which variant did you get?

Kem,

The spacers are so light, I wouldn't worry about USW, nor would I worry about throwing off the geometry with that narrow a spacer.

Randy,

Even the standard (short) studs from Bimmerworld will leave more than 10mm of thread exposed after the lug nuts are tightened. But the longer studs, which are hardened and have a flat black finish, look very sharp on the rear.
