Bimmers on Ebay
I was tracking several Ebay auctions for E46 coupes this past week to confirm or deny a rumor that manual transmission bimmers don't sell well. In the 11 auctions that I followed, none of the high bids approached KBB or the Edmunds estimates of "private party" sale value, none hit the reserve price, and, as far as I can tell, none sold.
Did I choose a bad week to do my experiment, or have others seen this happen? If this is not unusual, does it mean that Ebay isn't an efficient market for bimmers (i.e., they fetch the predicted prices in other markets) or does it reflect a softening market for used E46 coupes, in particular manuals? I'm interested because I need to decide wether to buy my leased '03 330 coupe for residual.

| | Reply » Bimmers on Ebay | Good point; I'm afraid my experiment didn't have a control group. (I never claimed it was scientific!) But KBB and Edmunds resale values claim to take transmission type into account. Are these measures then more inaccurate for manuals or are they overinflated generally? Or again, maybe its just Ebay--I suppose buyers would pay less for cars they haven't seen themselves. But if not Ebay, where would you list your car for sale? It seems to be the best marketplace for just about anything else.
I guess I'm just surprised that none of the auctions in my small sample group supported a KBB or Edmunds resale value, and want to confirm whether others have seen or experienced this disconnect. None of the sellers likely let go of the cars at the low bid values, but I would think some of them would have gotten to blue book offers.

It's not unusual for find many that don't sell, usually because the seller has the reserve too high. Check for "no reserve" completed auctions.

Also, this is very much my point: If the auctions I've watched haven't been completed because, as you suggest, the reserve prices are too high, and the high bids haven't approached blue book value, then it would seem that the blue book values are inflated.
Is it others' experience that bimmers, or E46 coupes or manuals don't go for blue book?
