 Wheel bearing failure at 28k?

Probably belongs in the e46 forum but I trust some of you guys .

Dad calls about their 2000 323 cic. Seems that the stealer, who sucks (not local to me thank God), says that the roaring sound from the front is both front wheel bearings going bad. With only 28k miles, I have some difficulty believing that but . Any of you guys have ideas or suggestions? They're claiming at least 600 clams to fix. A quick search didn't show any recalls or TSB's on that issue?

Thanks Ron but any clues as to what would cause a car with 28k miles to lose its bearings? (Puns anticipated)

My LF wheel bearing failed thanks to use at 14K.

I think that there is a *big* difference between 28k of my 60 year old mother's miles in a 323 and 14k of your M3 miles. I'm gonna see if I can talk my local dealer into helping out on this.

Just curious.... is this kind of thing covered under maintenance/warranty?
