 S52 M Coupe Emissions

Hi,

There's a "nice" '99 M Coupe for sale in the Seattle area that I'm looking into but something really worries me.

On the carfax it reports:
04/02/2004 75,938 California Inspection Station La Mesa, CA
Failed emissions inspection
08/19/2004 77,612 Auto Auction Sold at auction in Pacific Region
Listed as a fleet vehicle

Fails an inspection and then is auctioned off 2k miles later? That really doesn't seem right to me... Any other thoughts on the matter?

It's at a used car dealership called "Dream City Sports Cars" and has 77,800miles currently... they're asking $21K

If it failed emissions in CA, it coud be anything. A busted check engine light (this happened to me) , a disconnected vacuum hose, CAI, etc. will cause a car to fail.

And to add to the last comment, wouldn't California have the strictest requirements?

I saw that car right after I bought mine in August. I would have gotten it but I don't like colored interior and someone ripped the cargo net out of the passengers side.

Did it seem alright to you then? I'd hate to make the trip down only to be dissapointed. When you say ripped out do you mean removed or that it's *ripped* right out of the carpet and there are tears?

I know CA has the strictest regulations but it still sounds fishy to me.

It all depends on why it failed the smog inspection and if they even tried to fix it, before selling it at auction.A lot of dealers buy and sell their car at auction. My 2000 M Roadster with 28,000 miles and bone stock engine just barely past CA emisions a month ago. The hydrocarbons where high. The technician said new plugs would probably clean it up. If you are interested in the car have it inspected and smog checked before you buy it. That should answer your questions
