Protenza Failure
Had a catastrophic failure of a Bridgestone Protenza on the left rear of my 1999 M Roadster. Fortunately I was not going too fast when it occurred. I had driven it hard into a right angle curve about 5 minutes prior to the vibrations occuring that clued me in to something being wrong. I have a hole the size of my fist on the inner sidewall. The tires look new with plenty of tread but I just recently purchsed the car so I don't know for sure what the prior history might have been...
Anyone else had a problem with these tires?? It was extremely cold here in N.C. for several days prior to my driving the car. Could I have been too aggressive without letting the tires warm up??
| | Reply » Protenza Failure | its not the tire, its the previous owner, it seems like you had been had.
Never had a problem with my Potenzas, excellent tires, excellent handling, excellent ride, so far I had 7 s-03s on my car, and not once did I have issues, flat tires yes, but problems like what you stated no..
I would replace that tire asap...and match the rest..but the other tires on the car, you are taking a risk that those other tires may also have issues, i would dismount and mount them all and do a fresh install, and have a tire expert inpect it....
IMO...its your life we are talking about here., take NO RISKS!
| | Reply » Protenza Failure | Basically telling the guy he bought a lemon is not the best advice here, tire blowouts happen to a variety of tires for a variety of reasons. If there was something wrong with the car to the point it was ripping the tires apart you would notice. coulda been a gash in the tire sidewall from just about anything.

he said there was a BIG hole...this usually does not happen.....and my advice is to inspect all the tires, dismount and remount again?....NO??
could have been a gash, like I said..inspect the other 3 tires, I would just buy a whole new set.....IMO.
| | Reply » Protenza Failure | What was the vibration like? Did you feel it in the seat, or in the steering?
Cuz my steering wheel shakes at highway speeds, but I think it's cuz my wheels are bent.
| | Reply » Protenza Failure | yeah dude, you didn't buy a lemon. dont listen to him. Just becuase your tire blows out doesn't make your M3 a lemon I have the protenzas on my 04 z4 (dont knwo which make) Before purchasing my Z4 for my 18th birthday.... i drove around in 500$ POS rusty ass cavaliers and old sunfires and ****. So i have never before had the privalage of owning a car that comes with a set of tires that cost more to replace then what i paid for my previously owned vehicles All i can say is that i love the tires. I have never had a problem with them. i have taken my car around some corners and twisties and some high speeds and with the great BMW suspension working along side the protenzas, i feel the car "sticking" to the ground everytime. I love the tires and when they are worn out, i will be replacing them with new protenzas... run about 225-260 a tire though cuz i got the 18s Ouch. Does anyone else notice that the protenzas wear really fast, or is this just becuase its made of the sticky racing compound?
