Hello all,
I just purchased a 1999 m roadster (details). Unfortunately, it came with the flip-up dual cupholder whose function seems to be not to hold cups so well.
My question is two-fold: Is there any difference between upgraded e36-like coin/cupholder center console that was offered as a replacement as opposed to its e36 counterpart? They have different part numbers, and visually, there seems to be a flare on the front of the e36 cupholder that doesn't exist on the z3 counterpart. e36 cupholder, ebay picture z3 cupholder, leatherz image Are there any size or mounting issues as to why they wouldn't be interchangeable?
The second aspect is, if they are interchangeable, could the same be said for the modular, updated coin/cupholder console for e36, years 98+? updated e36 cupholder console From my experience, this is a much better system and would be an ideal upgrade if it fits. However, since I haven't seen it done before, it'd lead me to believe that they aren't compatible. I'd hope to hear otherwise!
Best regards,
CTS

Dont need cup holders in a car. Especially a roadster.

Just a quick update...
there seems to be an oddments tray to replace the modular ashtray for that 3 series center console system.
p/n 82 27 9 407 927
this'd be a nice touch since smoking in the car = death and also losing center console storage in a car that doesn't have much to begin with would probably be a bad idea.
I'll keep everyone updated,

Just a quck update:
I gave the incorrect partnumber for the whole console above and went back and editted it. It should be (I think) 82 27 9 404 572
The etk lists all the different p/n's for cupholder options but for each one lists the same generic picture which is why I got it wrong. I hope this didn't cause anyone any confusion.
I ordered today: console 82 27 9 404 572 ($74.40) stor. partition 82 27 9 407 927 ($15.24)
We'll see what shows up at the dealership's parts dept. in a week or so.
(I think from the following site and reading the German on this one that I've gotten it right).
I'll get everyone updated with pics when they come in.

Get the LeatherZ MK II. Not only is the armrest level with the door ledges, the placement of the cupholders is far better.
I had the original lidded cupholder, and managed to elbow a beverage out of its spot and it poured down behind the driver's seat, on my first day of ownership of my car

Thought I'd bring this back from the dead. Used the opportunity of a digital camera being around for Christmas to take some pictures of how it turned out.
Installation wasn't pnp, but it certainly wasn't bad either. Had to trim the console in 4 or 5 places to make everything work and also had to abandon the nutserts for mounting the mkII.
Closed, driver's side
Open, passenger's side (note the different color plastic of oddments tray exaggerated by using indoor flash for photo)
