Hello all,
I just purchased a 1999 m roadster (details). Unfortunately, it came with the flip-up dual cupholder whose function seems to be not to hold cups so well.
My question is two-fold: Is there any difference between upgraded e36-like coin/cupholder center console that was offered as a replacement as opposed to its e36 counterpart? They have different part numbers, and visually, there seems to be a flare on the front of the e36 cupholder that doesn't exist on the z3 counterpart. e36 cupholder, ebay picture z3 cupholder, leatherz image Are there any size or mounting issues as to why they wouldn't be interchangeable?
The second aspect is, if they are interchangeable, could the same be said for the modular, updated coin/cupholder console for e36, years 98+? updated e36 cupholder console From my experience, this is a much better system and would be an ideal upgrade if it fits. However, since I haven't seen it done before, it'd lead me to believe that they aren't compatible. I'd hope to hear otherwise!
Best regards,
CTS

My car comes standard with NO cupholders and NO glove-box.

E36 has the flare-out on the right side front. It will overhang when installed above the e-brake well in the center console. If you can live with that, it will otherwise work. I think.
Mk2 armrest lids will fit either the Z3-specific cupholder console or the E36 one.

Thanks for the help, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.
Of course all of this is so I can get an MKII.
It looks like the 98+ console doesn't have that lip from this picture. Which is good, since that's the way I'd like to go.
driver's side of console, from sale ad
The partnumbers appear to be: the whole apparatus - 82 27 9 404 572
components: frame - 51 16 8 217 479 cupholder (x2) - 51 16 8 217 480 coinbox - 51 16 8 217 481 ashtray - 51 16 8 217 482 bulb socket w/ bulb for ashtray (if desired) - 61 13 8 353 797
Well, here's to experimenting. Looks like I'll give it a go.
Thank you much,
CTS
EDITTED: gave incorrect part number on the whole system

The one in your picture might work. Both cupholders need to be in the forward position. Please let us know how everything works out.

There are many types of cup holders, and some have armrest. I got one at LeatherZ.com for the center console, Take a look at the markII
I also have two door mounted cup holders from Z3Solution.com Good Luck Mike T
