 Let's Crimp/Solder/Seal it...

Sorry to steal your thread style Ron, but I thought this would benefit folks.

I found out about these little gems last winter when I helped out part time (unpaid) at a local BMW shop just for kicks. Yeah, I like working on cars that much.

Made by Wurth's. The concept is that they replace freesoldering and heat-shrinking as two steps and make them into one step.

All you have to do is insert each wire into the connector, crimp on each side, and heat the center ball with a soldering iron or small torch. A jet-torch cigarette lighter would even work. The solder ball in the center will melt and spread inside the connector, and the plastic cover is heat-srhink so it will seal against the wires.

That description is for the connector piece, which is part Nos. 1559-941, -942, and -943 in the below photo. The other pieces use the same theory but are different styles of common connector.

Solder introduces several unwanted things.

Dissimilar metals, this can actually promote corrosion and a reduction in the integrity of the joint.

Solder stiffens the wires leading to fatigue fractures of the wire.

PROPER crimping avoids all of this and actually cold fuses the metals together creating a perfect joint. High end coax assemblies for radio use are all crimped only.

Interesting. Thanks for the info, guys.
