What is the purpose of the bearing grey coating on the inside? Also, just curious, were all of them grey like that (I heard stuff like red, yellow etc. bearings when mentioning the older ones for S54)?

It's from the scan. They are actually a dull silver gray.

Look at pic 5.
The red one is the top one in pic 1 (red text and part #).
The blue one is the bottom one in pic 1 (blue text and Part #).
You can see the blue marking on the bottom one in pic 1 and pic 3.

Does this mean we will be seeing a "Lets replace the s54 rod bearings because BMW NA won't do it" DIY article from you in the near future?

Or possibly:

"Lets grind off some shavings of an s54 rod bearing and put it in an oil sample to see if a lab can find it"
