If you are out of warranty might as well take it to an independent mechanic.

Go to John Handel at European Motorwerks in Arcadia:

86 E. Live Oak, Arcadia
626-445-6600

Tell him I sent you. His "inspection II" actually involves changing out fluids and stuff, instead of the cursory "look-over" that most dealerships do. For much less than $1,000, you actually get your tranny and diff flushed, your radiator fluids drained and refilled, all your seals inspected, your brakes flushed, your oil and filter changed, your interior filter replaced, and your fuel filter changed. The REAL inspection II.

And yes, at $1,000 you are WAY overpaying it.

Figure a good mechanic will charge $75-$100 per hour. Inspection II is about 2-3 hours work.

$300 labor, $100 parts, should be in in the $400-$500 range with an good indy.

update:
i was lucky to stop them before they got too far into the Inspection 2, but they did start to drain the oil... so i told them just to do an oil change and i'll pay for that.

guess how much an oil change is at McKenna?? 550 dollars!!!
220 for labor, 120 for oil, change of air filter and top off the wiper fluid. I was pretty pissed off telling them that 220 for oil is like 17 bucks a quart, so they lowered that price and i ended up paying 320 for my oil change. I can't believe they charge 220 for 20 minutes of labor. thats like almost 700 bucks an hour.

I think the Los Angeles County DA's Consumer Fraud office should be contacted, and that you should make a complaint, because a $550 oil change sounds like fraud.

Wow. I thought the oil service (oil, filter, microfliter, check fluids) for my 330i was steep at $180. Luckily that was picked up by BMW.
