Did my first oil change today and noticed a strange build up inside the oil cap. Its a red gooey substance. Has any one else seen this or is it cause for concern? (its a 2001 325xi wagon with 45,000 miles, 5 speed) Thanks  |

Good example of poor maintenance or some idiot adding something very bad to the oil.

I would try to compare your cap with another 3-series that shares the same motor, just to have an idea of what normal would look like. From what I see in the pictures, I don't think we share the same sludge problem. The residue on your oil fill cap seems to be reddish in color (my internals look like they're mucked with black tar) I do remember hearing of red residue left on the oil fill caps. I would give Blackstone a shot and try to find out whats going on with your oil but it's probably going to turn out fine (doesn't hurt to give it a try tho) Check out my thread for updates on the ARX process

apparently the rusty gunk builds up because of frequent short trips without having the motor up to temp
