Using too much oil?
I could really use some guidance before I go back to my dealer all upset. I have just bought a 1995 728i with 90,000 miles on the clock and have got through 1.5 litres of engine oil over the 1000 miles that I've had it.
I spoke to BMW and they could only give me figures for newish cars and quoted between 600/1000 miles/litre consumption.
Am I mad or does this seem like a hell of a lot?
| | Reply » Using too much oil? | Itīs too much. Anything more than 0.5 litres per 600miles/1000kms is considered too much on a new car and would make it a lemon. 1.5litres, no matter how old the car is, means you either have a leak or the engine is burning oil because it is completely worn.
Buying such an old luxobarge is quite a risk. And if oil consumption is so high, itīs not unlikely that the mileage stated is faked. It is so very easy to readjust the mileage on an old car and it makes such a difference in resale value, itīs amlost a common occurence nowadays.
The purchase you made might not have been the wisest. Any chance to renegotiate? Was it a private sale or through a dealer? Any warranties?
