German Automakers
After reading many posts, foreign and domestic for the last year and a half - and IMO, German carmakers seem to be copying Japanese styling cues inside and out. Except Audi so far.
Why is this happening? Regarding their thoughts on the U.S. market in particular: Do they think we are buying Japanese cars in huge volume for their looks? If so, they are way off base! Or, do they think we are buying Japanese cars for their reliability and efficiency?
Based on the new models AKA - Mercs, Bmrs, VW's, the automakers must think we are buying Japanese cars for their looks.
Am I wrong here?
| | Reply » German Automakers | I've always understood that it was the Japanese copying the Germans. It's their solution to competing for a share of the luxury car market.
| | Reply » German Automakers | How can you understand the Japanese copying the Germans when you can compare, in general, the front of a 2001 Lexus IS300 to a 2006 e90 in the hood and crease toward the front 1/4's. Or compare a 1999 rear of a Maxima(minus the spoiler) to the e90's.
Too close for comfort.

Am I wrong here? | Nobody I know ever bought a Jap SEDAN for their looks. They've poorly copied German cars since the 70's. Open the hood of an old Toyota and it screams 3 series at you.

Too close for comfort. | That Maxima was one of the worst looking cars.

Am I wrong here? | I would think they all copy from each other. Maybe not particular parts, but aspects of looks and feels maybe imitating the 'elegance' of a hood line, and not the hood line itself. And why not? Artists do it all the time. At a certain level, every car looks alike: A box on 4 wheels, so I wouldn't worry about it.
But on another level, it's always fun to take sides and critique.
I bet if you look hard enough, you'd see that BMW probably took it's stylistic cues from another manufacturer, and the fans of that brand will be poo-poo-ing on BMW.
