 Considering 1998 740iL with 112,000 miles

I'm looking at a 1998 740 iL with 112,000 miles on it. It seems to have all of the options (heated seats, wheels, 5 CD changer, moonroof, leather).

The seller is asking $14000, but I may be able to get him down a little. He appears to be a straight shooter.

How do 7 series owners do with high mileage like this?
What price would I need to get it for for it to be a good deal?
Anything that I should specifically ask him?
Anything that has a tendency to crap out on this model once you get to that mileage?

How much should I let the mileage bother me?

Thanks for the help.

Kurt

Ahhh maintanence NIGHTMARE! BMWs suck, price wise, after their warranties run out. Most of them with high mileage are huge problems dude to all their parts start to wear out and each time you take it into the shop it will probably cost you about $1500 minimum. Try to get a warranty if you can otherwise steer clear of it.

BMW's are great cars, and that $1500 thing is a lie, by the way that person probably never owned a BMW. that milage is not bad at all, I've been driving BMW's for years and I've had my share of problems with them but the truth is that I've had more far ups than downs. my last 528i had over 160,000 miles on it and it ran like a dream, I sold it for over $11,000 and got no complaint since. Just service the car like your suppose to and it will run better than a new American maid car. by the way a good test drive is to take it on the highway and do at least 80 mph, this with bring out the noises.

My 97 740iL has a little less than 112K miles and it runs great and also a pleasure to drive. It has its share of wear and tear but nothing made the car stop running.

Here's my list of problems.

Steering wheel pressure hoses gone bad, leaking, replaced.
Air con on the passenger side is still cold air only.
The info display is going bad, can't really read the number or letter on it but I could guess what it says.
Brake wear out a bit faster than I like but it's a heavy car to stop.

Just make sure you get all the service records and no rust on it. Good luck.

I drove a 1999 540 with 160,000 miles on it and at one time my wife drove a 1998 528 with 125K miles. The cars drove very well. My wifes car never had a problem - but the 540 blew a radiator ($350 installed), the fuel pump went out ($400 installed) and I had to replace the ABS system ($1,100 installed). Never once did I pay $1,500 for anything.

Personally I think buying a high mileage bimmer is a smart way to start driving a BMW at a low entry point. But, you are buying a high mileage vehicle - so I'll share with you some of the strategies that I learned that made managing the maintenence a snap.

1) Find two good, independent BMW repair shops on opposite sides of town. Make sure they have a history of working on BMWs specifically. Also, make sure they have a high end diagnositic computer.

2) Invest in a "road side assistance" plan (about $100 per year). This covers towing in case the car dies on you.

3) If the car has a problem, have it towed to one the closest of your two preferred repair shops.

4) Change your oil about every 7,500 miles (or twice a year) and use synthetic.

5) And - if it were me, I'd probably change the water pump during my first repair - regardless of whether its leaking or not. (unless you know for certain its been replaced recently). The part is cheap - and the labor won't be much if he is already working on the car. Water pumps go out - so you might as well be proactive.

For pricing, just get on KBB and check out the pricing. Keep in mind, you can probably negotiate a much lower price because simply because the high miles will limit his/her prospective buyers.

Be well.

Oh... one last thing. 112,000 miles really isn't that high. I friend of mine makes his living selling high mileage BMWs - that's all he does. Some of them have more than 250,000 miles when he sells them.

They are great cars.
