Experiences with Motorola RAZR and T-Mobile

My 650i isn't here yet, but it should be by tomorrow. I went to the BMW page on the Bluetooth site today and it still claims that the RAZR works only with Cingular service. Since Cingular service is less than ideal for me, and I am stuck with it on my Mercedes, I want to get T-Mobile as my provider in the 6er. But I also want the full capability of BMW's telematics.

So I called BMW customer service this afternoon and asked if the RAZR was compatible with T-Mobile service. (I had read that T-Mobile has only recently been allowed by Motorola to sell RAZRs. So I thought maybe the page needed updating.)

I spoke to a delightful, effervescent young woman who told me that officially BMW's answer is that the RAZR's Bluetooth won't work with T-Mobile, but "unofficially" she has heard that it can work. She asked around and said there had been no updates at BMW. She also did not know if using a T-Mobile "unofficially" would allow a customer to access all the telematics.

Does anyone out there have a Motorola RAZR V3 with T-Mobile working in his/her BMW? How does it work? Are there any compatability or other issues? Any tricks we should know about?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that it will work just fine. I have a Razr from Cingular but almost bought one through T-Mobile. From what I recall, they're the exact same phone. They both use the same form of bluetooth. I think. Buy the phone and take it by a dealership to see if it works. T-mobile should at least have a one day return policy. I hope this helps at least a little bit.

Thanks, Duke. I'm trying to find out for sure. Everybody knows somebody who knows somebody who has T-Mobile and a Motorola RAZR, but so far no first-hand accounts. That's what I'm looking for in this thread.

T-Mobile and Cingular go so far as to share some cell towers, their phones should all be interchangable.

I work for one of the telecomm's that supply the chips.

Motorola cut a deal with Cingular so they could have first short with the Razor phones. So for one year, no one else could sell them.

Time is up, and any company who wants to sell Razors, i.e. Verizon, T-mobile, etc. can and will.

Aside from CDMA/TDMA/GSM/WCDMA chipsets, these phone are identicle with respect to blue tooth.

The questions is, does the carriers phone book API hooks work the same so your numbers show up in i-drive.

I have a Cingular-branded RAZR running the latest Cingular firmware and flex, as well as a generic RAZR with the latest unbranded firmware and flex. They both work fine with my BMW (2003 w/ the 552 ULF). I have also used a T-Mobile SIM in the generic RAZR and that works with my car as well.

So there shouldn't be any problem with the T-Mobile RAZR in the car. T-Mobile's return policy is 2 weeks, I think.

BMW's compatibility list is probably restricted to phone / carrier / car combinations that they tested when the option first came out. Given what they endured with the Verizon V710, I can see why they're now uninclined to say that a given phone from a different carrier will work.
