Bluetooth update 84106965056 replaced by 84106963798 and cost more $$

I bought 1 of 3 BT TCU (part number 84106965056) from a dealer for $765. I found it for $620 but waited too long to order, that dealer can no longer get it. Part number 84106965056 has been superceded by part number 84106963798, bad part is the retail price is approximately $1500 cheapest I found it was for $1148 for the new part number

Bottom line is if you want part number 84106965056, better buy it now before dealers who have them in stock are sold out. Its probably not permissible to post dealers names on this website so if you want a list of dealers I found today 10/25/2005 that still have the old part number (price $765-$850), send me a PM and Ill list the dealers I found.

Other info I have found is the TSB associated with the older part number, it was only issued 09/01/2005 and already has been superceded, below is a link to the TSB 841405

http://www.alldata.com/tsb/BMW/11255...405/index.html

Hope this info helps, if someone finds out what the advantages are to the new part number, please post it, I could not find out anything as its probably to new.

I got the new TCU today (84106965056) today, installed it in the 04 325ci w/Assist w/o Nav (08/2004 build date), it didnt work I hope all it needs is coding by the dealer (or I have a bad TCU).

FYI

A BMW tech suggested since I have an 06 M3 w/Assist and Nav, I swap the 2 units between cars so I took the back panel in the trunk off the 06 M3 and it has the new TCU I listed above 84106963798 so I swapped the units between the cars (056 in the 06 m3, 798 in the 04 325ci). The 056 TCU did not work in the 06 M3 no matter what I tried, the 798 TCU did work in the 04 325ci w/o pairing, recognized the phone, downloaded my phone book right away . As an additional test, I deleted the BMW device in my phone, performed the pairing in the 04 325ci with the 056 TCU, paired up and saved entry, I have voice recognition, every function that was available when the 798 TCU was in the M3.

Since the 06 M3 is not even 1 month old (delivery 10/01), Im sure leaving the 798 TCU in the 04 325ci and the 056 TCU in the 06 M3 will not be the correct thing to do for my warranty and whatever else may come up. Anyone think differently? One other thing, I still have BMW Assist, only bad thing is its associated with my 06 M3 vin number.

In addition, when I pulled the original TCU out of the 04 325ci, the part number was 84116952218, turned it over and it had a BT Pass Key on it just like the other 2 TCU (056, 798), so I started looking thru the owners manual and found the card with my Pass Key on it, same number. I also had the Owners Manual for Full Preparation Package Cell phone. Before ever buying the 056 TCU, I tried to pair my phone with the 04 325ci with what I now know is a 218 TCU in it and it never worked, all it ever said was "ACTIVATE PHONE" which is the same thing the 056 TCU says in both the 06 M3 and 04 325ci. I have an appointment with the dealer on 11/01/2005 to code the 056 TCU in the 04 325ci but first Im going to ask them if they will try coding the 218 module in the 04 325ci if its possible, maybe I dont have to buy anything but something tells me I wont get that lucky .

I hope all this makes sense and helps someone that has an 04 3-series, BMW Assist and no Navigation with a build date of 08/2004. This may also apply to anyone with a similar 3-series with a build date between 03/2004 and 08/2004 since BMW specifies thoes build dates in the TSB above. The only thing I have purchased is the 056 TCU, Im assuming I dont need anything else since the 798 TCU works in the 04 325ci.

Dealer coded the 056 module today, works the same as 798 module, for E46 with a build date from 03/04 thru 08/04 the 056 module will allow you to have Bluetooth and BMW Assist.

Yes, I had one of those TCU's in my 2004 M3. Same as you. Passkey on the TCU as well as in the owners pack .... even the sales person (of all people) told me I would have BT. I had the BT antenna in the center console ... however, I soon realised this was aload of BS. The story goes that the TCUs had the BT removed from them, as Motorola and BMW had difficulty getting everything ready for a 2004 rollout. As we now know, they rolled it out in the 2005 model years.

Quick question .... does your new 798 TCU have voice input for the Navigation system (if you have this ?). All the previous versions (other than the 1st iteration) of this BT/Assist TCU had voice input for the phone only.

Thanks, Adrian

I have NAV in the 2006 M3, no voice input for the NAV. Are you talking about giving commands to the NAV via voice recognition?

Do you know where I can find a listing of all the available voice commands for BT, is there more commands other than the ones when you say "Help", is that all?

Know anything about Sirius in the 2004 or 2006, either model?

Ok .... thanks for the info.

Right, FYI ... once upon a time, BMW made a standalone voice input system for the E46. It included voice input for both the phone, and the navigation as well (dont get too excited though ... you could say "Map" and the map would pop up, or you could say "Scale ..." and the map would scale. It wouldn't permit you to "say" an address however) and some note thing which I can't remember how to use anymore. I believe this seperate system is now pretty much discontinued. Some dealers may still have the odd one knocking about and you periodically see folks selling them on Ebay. It had a terrible flaw though. The moment you plugged the thing in, you got this horrid hiss through the Audio system ... all the time, not just when you were using the voice input. I ripped the thing out, and got a refund !!

However, with the advent of the BT/Assist TCU, they ended up including the voice input into the same box, so the older standalone system was now redundant. These systems include voice input for the phones only though (as you can now testify to). I thought perhaps they may have added new functionality with your new TCU ... but sounds like this is not the case.

To confuse you even more .... the BT only TCUs that are out there (the ones that dont included any Assist functionality) for some reason included voice input for both the phone and Navigation ... just like the standalone Voice input system did .... bizzare hey ?! Its a different supplier.

Now to your question on Voice input commands. Doesn't your telephone booklett that came with your 2006 describe the commands ? I know the booklett that came with the 2005 didn't and BMW was suppose to update the book ... Mmm ... don't tell me they still haven't done it !

Anyway, I made myself my own list .... Dont blame me if something is wrong here ... I never really when back and updated it, so it might be wrong in places !!!

Finally, yes I have Sirius .... fire away with your questions !!

Now something you can help me with. Can you tell me what S/W version is loaded on your Navigation system in your 2006. To check simply goto the settings menu, and jot down the full number show in the right hand corner. Just interested that all ..... :-)

Cheers, Adrian
