Car Insurance: Parked car covered under collision or comprehensive

Yesterday my parked 525iA was hit at my wife's workplace.
No note was left.

There is a small dent right under the light on the left rear.
There is some paint scraped off the bumper also.
It is not very visible but the dent is there.

I was under the impression that if you are not driving or inside a car (a stationary vehicle), any damage to that will be under comprehensive coverage.

The insurance company is saying that it will be a collision claim evey though the car was parked.

There is a big 10x difference between my comprehensive and collision deductible so this is important!

(Can some admin edit the spelling of collission as it appears in the front page).

I believe you are correct! but each car policy explains the meaning of each coverage in detail, so the definition is not left for any loose interpretation. You need to review it.

But you have to also note, that adjustors or claims rep are pretty sharp in determining if it was possible for someone to hit a car at certain areas while its park.

Maybe, you just need to be a little better in convincing, less said the better.

Not an expert on this, but I was always under the impression that the situation you described (unknown vehicle caused damage) would only be covered under Uninsured motorist coverage.

Uninsured motorist typically has the same coverage as collision. I think I have a deductible waiver rider but that is only valid when the other driver can be identified.

In this case we do not have any proof or witness. All we see is the damage to the car.

I'm no expert either but I do believe your insurance company is correct, it's a collision claim. This is my understanding:

Comprehensive is for a loss caused by something other than another vehicle including damage from road debris, damage from storms, damage from trees or other things collapsing on the car, theft of contents and theft of the vehicle itself.

Collision is for a loss incurred as a result of you striking another vehicle, someone else striking your vehicle (even if you are parked), or you striking some fixed object (like a structure, pole, curb, hillside).

So by looking at the damage, they will determine whether it was due to a car hitting the stationary vehicle or any other object?

What if the damage was caused by a wheel-chair or something bumping against the car? Does it become comprehensive or collision?

I had seriously thought that the rule of thumb was that if the car is being driven then it is collision; if it is parked then it is comprehensive. Now it comes to the gray area where by looking at the damage, they will decide whether it was another car which hit our car or something else? This brings in too much subjectivity into the picture!
