I just picked up a 2000 540i over the weekend. Both master keys that came with the car will not unlock or lock the car. At the time I figure they had dead batteries. But after reading the owner and went for a long drive to charge the key up. It still doesn't work.
Does this mean I need new keys or the receiver in the car is dead? How much does a new key cost?

The dealer should be able to reprogram the keys. I had the same problem on my 01, but I think starting in 2001 there were different keys.

Thanks! | New key for 540i at the BMW dealers start @ about $137 per key. Try ebay they have the same keys for about $50 each. But, check with the parts/service dept @ BMW to see if you really need a new key.
