 Window regulator

I've seen so many posts and comments about the crappy regulators on the BMW's. Why doesn't everyone on this site send a complaint to BMW regarding this ongoing problem? I work in a Regulatory/Quality Department for a manufacturer and when we receive X-amounts of complaints, we are forced to do a corrective action and fix the problem. Sounds like BMW needs to do something. With enough pressure, I would guess they would.

That is a good question. I think that they have done improvements on the windows regulators, but it looks like it's still not enough.

On my old coupe (E46), I've had them replaced three times. On my new cars (both E46, one is coupe, the other one is sedan), they caused no headaches so far. I also think that Coupe is more prone to regulator problems compared to the sedan, maybe due to the glass size and weight.

Alex, do you also think because the window is opened and closed every time the door gets opened and closed, it's just the repetitive movement causes failure?

Certainly that might also be one of the reasons. Also, the frameless door design might be another problem, which is not the case on Sedans.

Interesting-- i'd always heard that the sedan regs fail more than the coupes. Regardless ,the design clearly sucks. I agree we should send them complaints. I actually did so about a year ago, along w/ links to about 50 threads on window reg failures (representing probably 200+ failures reported on this and other boards). I cou'ldve easily found more. I really can't fathom how BMW can't realize there's a problem and just fix it. THey've addressed more minor stuff and more major stuff, but they consistently ignore this issue. Its truly bizarre.

I have a sedan and have had 5 regulator failures. I think it has more to do with the year E46... '00, '01, '02 being the worst years.
