A quick search turned up that the car was produced in 1967 -68. 1254 cars were produced.
It was based on a manufacturers design that BMW aquired, Glas. BMW dropped in the 1600 Ti motor and called it the 1600 GT. It produced 105 HP.
They shut down production in 1968 and transfered the tools to South Africa where production continued for a few more years. See the German link below:

I hadn't seen it either and I found some of the same research links as you. I like it. If people aren't aware, you can find really good stuff on ebay with keyword searches like "BMW rare" and then list in descending price. All kids of stuff turns up. Same deal with ebay UK and ebay Germany.
