I want to learn..
hey everyone. I have decided i want to learn how to drive a manual. I know its wierd since my car is a step, but i wanted a manual but couldnt get one because my mom cant drive one.
the thing is, we dont have any cars that have manuals. My dad knows how to drive one though, and i guess he could teach me, but where would we get the car from lol?
Only one of my friends drive a stick, and I cant ask to drive his, because I dont want to damage his car.
Do they have teaching companies like they do for drivers ed, where you can learn a man. on their cars?
thanks

thanks | With steptronic you're almost half way there. You know the right hand has to move the gear lever (although going through the gears is a little more complex than what steptronic demands). Now all you have to do is coordinate that with the left foot and the clutch pedal (unless you get an SMG). While a driving school would be a good idea, I'd also try a performance school, or even BMW's program after you feel comfortable with the shifting.

Good references before you start. Practice in a parking lot and light traffic. You'll be 90% after 1 day. After 6 weeks you'll have no problems. Experience is the best teacher. Good luck!

I would advise that you read all about driving a manual, so you understand the basic concepts. Don't worry about heal-toe or double clutching while you're learning the basics, those are pretty advanced topics and are not required for everyday driving while you're learning.
If you can't find a friend or relative that has a car with a manual that you can learn with, try this:
Once you think you have read enough to understand the basics, go to a dealer and let them know up front that you want to buy a manual but don't know how to drive one yet. A very good salesman (if you're lucky enough to find one) will take you to a remote stretch of road or vacant parking lot and teach you the very basic esentials to get the car moving. They should spend enough time to allow you to feel comfortable with starting, shifting, and stoping. This should give you enough of a taste to see if you can handle a stick. (And I'll bet you can!)
If you can find a dealer/SA that will do this, remember to compensate them when you start working a deal. I'm not saying you should bend over and get screwed, but don't try to work them down to the lowest possible dollar. Allow them a little profit as compensation for them teaching you how to drive a stick.
