Front end paint chips are a drag. They are inevitable with normal driving habbits. Even the clear treatment "bras" , I'm told, only prevent the minor chips, but you'll still experience the larger ones. I read a few years back that Mercedes Benz was working on automobile paint that used nanotechnology to create a paint that does NOT chip. The paint is manufactured and applied in such a way that the paint does not flake, and therefore does not chip. Has anyone heard anything lately on this up and coming technology? When might we expect it to be actually used for production? Anybody heard if BMW is researching this as well?

Read "$10 Gazillon/gallon". Sounds really neat though. Probabily will be just like Chamelion paint if it ever comes out.

Nano paint is nice and dandy, but it's not chip proof. No paint in the world will survive rock hit at 30mph or above.

MB is already using the paint on some models (but maybe not for all countries yet?).
I don't think it is chip proof but supposed to be scratch resistant and fade resistant from some of the ad material I've read.

I may be mistaken, but I think they are using this nano-paint technology on all of thier models. I know that our 2005 C230 has it, so that would lead me to believe that the more expensive models would have it as well. I think that it has some sort of rubbery properties that help bouce the small would be chipping stones off the surface instead of simply taking the blow. I can tell you though, that we still have some small chips in the fornt spoiler.
Also, is everything going to be called "Nano" whatever this year?

Anything measured in micrometers or smaller and that's been 'engineered' is now being called 'nano'. So whole scientific endeavors on those scales now suddenly find a new marketing tool to get funding from the government. I guess that last point doesn't make it so bad.
