A lengthy online article explaining how BMW is working with electronic manufacturers on a system which could make passing a safer experience. Seems to be possibly part of a future NAV system. See: http://tl.gpsworld.com/gpstl/article....jsp?id=416710

The described system does not monitor oncoming traffic, in other words the #1 cause for accidents related to passing! Of course I agree that this missing feature is probably the biggest technological challenge. But without it I'd rate the system as rather useless yet if not dangerous, supposing that (inexperienced) drivers would start relying on it.

Yep, just like the Volvo S80 commercial, run up on someone and it tells you to swerve, of course that may turna simple rear ender into a massive head on if there is a truck coming the other way.
Maybe we ought to think about actually teaching people to drive?

Quote: | The described system does not monitor oncoming traffic, | correct but it provides information about road geometry which, in combination with other factors makes for safer passing.
I wrote about this (not a dedicated article on the subject however) and there is no question that giving the driver more information, such as a visual "there is a better place to pass in 200 m" is of value.
