At the top of this forum you'll see that I bookmarked a manual's thread for the E39 but I have no idea the extent of wiring diagrams contained within.

I'll be able to tell you how many pages on the instrument cluster when they show up at my doorstep. The dealer wanted about two hundred when I asked months ago and I thought that was simply too much. Where do they get off charging that much for what I now see we can get for half that amount?
I'm thankful for Agent99 and his helpful stickies!

Quote: | I'm thankful for Agent99 and his helpful stickies! | Bentleys came in for my E39. Two fat books - volume II is the electrical system which covers the instrument cluster starting on page 620-1. The Bentley covers the layout, I/O, functions, testing, and R&R for the next 8 pages.
With respect to the requested wiring diagrams, the Bentley manual starts to get interesting at page 620-5 where there is an idealized description of the inputs and outputs to the instrument cluster, namely: - three lines for the ignition key - a connections for each of the two fuel level sensors - connection to the engine coolant temperature - a connection to the ambient air sensor - something called S.I reset - mileage reset/BC test button - photo-transistor signal - BC stalk control - light switch - Ti/TD CAN bus to the ECU - a line to the brake pad wear sensors - vehicle speed signal to the speedo - Left rear wheel speed sensor for the ABS via the CAN-bus - Airbag connection (MRS II) - the alternator charge light to the alternator connection - a connection to the engine oil pressure line - cruise control on GRII switch lines - parking-brake-on light lines - brake-fluid level line - K-bus connection - low-fuel line to the ECU - speed signal A - gong line - something called the DLC - and the OBDII line
But this in no way is an actual wiring diagram - it's just the connections.
This section of the Bentley goes on to show how to initiate instrument cluster self testing and then how to reset the instrument cluster software. Then it shows how to remove and replace the cluster and stops there.
Slightly better wiring diagrams for the instrument panel are found in section ELE-413, which goes on to ELE-423 covering the wiring diagrams titled: - Instrument Panel Display and information overview (3 pages) - Instrument Panel Integrated instrument cluster control module IKE A63 (3 pages) - Instrument Panel power supply (1 page) - Instrument Panel DME/instrument cluster interface (1 page) - Instrument Panel fuel level sensors I and II (1 page) - Instrument Panel Garage door opener (1 page) - Instrument Panel Power (1 page)
Each of these pages above is a (very) simplified wiring diagram. Just order the Bentleys - they'll arrive in a day or two. Let us know if those wiring diagrams work for you.
