First long road trip
Just returned yesterday from a San Diego-Salt Lake City-Denver & return trip.
I have had my 540iAT for 11 months.
In short --- no troubles, is very stable, cruises quietly without effort at 90 - 100+ mph for hours.
Two shortcomings: 1) This is not a car for 5 grown-ups (the trip from SLC to Denver & return was crowded -- not much leg & hip room in the back seat). The San Diego - SLC legs were with 3 grown-ups --- and much more comfortable. 2) The A/C was marginal in the 90 & 100 degreee heat of Las Vegas & desert areas.
I still love the car !!!!!!!!

I drive from Richmond to Atlanta quite often and my car is absolutely perfect for 4 or less people. On my last trip, I averaged 32 MPG and 74 miles per hour for the entire 8-9 hour drive. Not too shabby for a 7 year old car with 85,xxx miles eh? I can only imagine how comfortable a 5 must be on a trip like that.

I can easily get 32 mpg on the freeway at 80 mph and still have plenty of power to pass. V8s are a bit thristy and while the power is nice, it isn't totally necessary. Comfort seats go a long way to keep you fresh and blood flowing to all neceassry body parts. The lumbar can help those of us with lower back issues. I haven't had my E60 545i out on a real good long trip (well, I don't really count the 1250 miles done during euro delivery in Europe due to break-in and stuff) yet but from what I can tell, I don't think I'm going to get much better than 24-26 mpg at 80 mph. Time will tell.
