 Exhaust smell in car

I think this is kind of strange but when I open the sunroof in the tilted position or open the door windows no more than half way I get a strong exhaust smell inside the car. I believe a vacum is being created and is sucking the exhaust into the car. If you open the trunk the smell is very strong but I have not been able to loacate the source. With the windows closed there is no smell. The car is a 2002 325I. Anybody had a similar problem?

I'll move that to the E46 forum.

Hi there, my very first post in this forum. I have a very same problem with my car but the dealer do not think of or find any problems. They think some piece of plastic or rubber must have gotten into the exhaust. I just had my car back from BMW and that was whatthey told me. I could have asked them to locate that piece of plastic" ... I hope someone in here could help us out.

Does this happens when your at speed - on the highway for example? If so, it tells me that there is an exhaust leak somewhere under the hood or under the car. It is indeed creating a vacuum but that vacuum isn't strong enough to suck the exhaust from the back of the car all the way into the cabin.

If it happens when parked (as indicated by your troubleshooting), what's more than likely happening is the fresh air being drawn in by the interior HVAC system is also sucking in a bit of exhaust fumes. This would be especially true if this happens in a relatively enclosed space, say parking garage or carport.

Yes it happens at speed and not when sitting still. It does not happen when the HAC is on or when the windows are up. The only thing I have added to the car are the BMW Chrome Plated exhaust tips.
