 1999 528 transmission problem?

Hello fellow 528 drivers. I'm new to Bimmerfest and can use your experience. I just hung up the phone with my dealer that is doing general maintenance. He informed me, entirely to my suprise, that my automatic transmission is "burnt." Apparently, the sealed fluid is black and smells burnt. What lead them to check out the transmission was the check engine light appearing on the dash. The car (1999 528) has approx. 86k miles on it. My confusion is that there have been absoulutely no transmission performance issues, so it's hard to belive a new transmission is required. Is it reasonable to ask them to simply change the fluid, and not the entire transmission?
Thanks for your help,
Alan

The tranny supposedly has "lifetime" fluid in it--i.e. you don't ever have to change it. But lets look at this more closely, if your tranny fails (could be at 100 miles or 100,000 miles), then the fluid lasted the lifetime of the tranny. Who knows if changing the fluid (at 50 miles or 50,000 miles) would have allowed to keep going?

So, they may give you grief about changing the fluid but it could be a lot less expensive experiment to see if it helps. Otherwise, get a second opinion from a tranny shop or independent BMW mechanic.

Something is very wrong here as I learned this week after some terrible driving experiences that I need a new automatic transmission in my 1999 528i. I bought the car new and it has only 54,000 miles on it. I find this outrageous, especially when I saw on the internet that one mechanic says the transmission filter should be changed every 15, 000 miles to prolong the life of the tranny. All my service has been done by the BMW dealer and no where does it say they even checked that filter no less replaced it. I think this is a BMW maintenance goof, big time! They're asking me to pay $3700 for a rebuilt tranny, not as bad as the guy who paid $8800 for same problem. Ouch BMW, its no longer a Beeeemmmmeeeerrrr, its a bummer! BMW is going to hear a lot more from me and so is the internet until the world knows the BMW transmission and their maintenance is junk and non-existent, in that order . Has anyone found a tranny dip stick? Life time fluid that YOU can expect to fail shortly after the 50,000 mile warranty.
