I wouldn't buy any BMW unless fully covered by warranty for the transmission. Otherwise, playing with fire.

But is it a reliable car?

You need to try and get a vehicle history of the car. Depending upon the dealer (and maybe their mood?), you should be able to take the VIN to the dealer and get a print-out of the service history. CarFAX is also another avenue to pursue for getting information. I've got a buddy ready to sell his 2000 540i...his has been fine for the last 54k miles. I dunno about the price...I'm not too up on the used car market for BMWs. Check eBay, check on line, edmunds, kelly blue book, autotrader, places like that will give you a decent range. Also, unless you list all the options, it is difficult to tell if the price is good or bad. My former boss also just bought a 2000 528i with about 87k on it and so far so good on that car. The only gotcha with 540s is the radiator. These are known to fail in the 60-100k range. See if it has been replaced. If not, keep a close eye on it. Check all the points where hoses connect to it...those are the weak spots.

edit: This is sad. After reading that post from almost exactly one year ago today, I curiously checked my odometer. 44,624. Last year's post odo reading was 42,816. Less than 2,000 miles in a year. sigh. The X5 ate up 13,000.
