Any ideas? My 01 530i battery dies..replaced, but drains while driving. New remanufactured 120 Amp alternator put in due to a dead alternator by diagnostics. Engine running at idle 10-20 minutes..no problem. Once driving, while engine demand was high (automatic shifting, etc.) an odor of burning rubber. Small amount of white smoke in the engine compartment on the passenger side. Only visible when looking under hood. Nothing that seemed like a fire. Could not locate the exact spot. Drove it to the shop. Once in the lot..battery discharge light apprears (oh so familiar). Dead alternator. Could it be a bad remanufacture? Wire short? Electrical nightmare?

Bad rebuild, seen it many times. Get another one....and hopefully it will be better. I try to be careful about where I get rebuilds from. I have had the best luck with the ones offered by the factory dealers. Not sure about BMW though...perhaps they only offer new?

Had my alternator fail on my 530. Dealer quoted me $930 for a new one installed. $600+ for just the alternator. After I picked myself off the floor, I called around to other dealers for the prices on alternator. I was quoted about 300 for a remanufactured alternator from BMW. I called the 1st dealer and they were like "oh yeah, we can install a reman for like $600". Not cheap by any means but better than 1k. Since I needed the car AND it was already at the dealer AND they could have it ready the next day, I said fine go ahead and replace it.
Also found that the alternaotrs in our model are either Bosch or Valaeo (sp?). The one in my car was a Bosch but the reman was a Valeao. No prob, they are direct drop in for either. Same connector appearently.
NEXT time, I'll buy the alternator online (approx $150 or so) and have it replaced at my local shop that works on only german cars (about 2-3 hrs labor). Total cost should be no more than about $375 installed.
I hope it doesn't happen again but I know for next time.

Thanks for your thoughts. I certainly am afraid the dealer may "offer" me such a great steal (for them of course). I hope it's just a bad rebuilt alt. Sounds like the first stop. This newly fried alternator has a warranty such that the unit should be replaced.
